The governing body of golf started as the United States Golf Association (USGA) in the year 1894. The current governing body is the Professional Golf Association of America which was founded in the year 1916.
During the beginning of 1981, the name of the pro circuit was officially changed to Tournament Players Association (TPA) Tour and then again to Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tour. Tournament golf had become a well-established sport in the country by the 1920s and has been gaining popularity ever since.

The history of golf sport in India can be tracked back to the 19th century and it was the first county, outside of Great Britain to embrace golf as a sport.
In India, the first golf club was founded in the year 1829 and was givewas given the n the name, Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC). It was said to be the oldest golf club in the world outside of Great Britain.
The year 1958 was the turning point in the history of golf in India. It was during this time when the Indian Championship was shifted from the Royal Calcutta Golf Club and was to be played alternatively at three venues.
Over the years, with the popularity of golf and a good amount of support and motivation, some of the golfers have proved to be exceptional. Players including Ali Sher, Arjun Atwal and Jeev Milka Singh, have brought laurels to the country.
The country also possesses the world’s largest 18-hole golf course, which is situated at Gulmarg, Kashmir. Apart from this, the world’s highest 9-hole golf course is also native to India, it is situated in the lap of the Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak of the Himalayas.
